I snapped a couple pics of my frogfish while he was luring tonight.  I thought you might enjoy them.  I am pretty sure he is Antennarius hispidus.

You can see the esca pretty good in the pic.  When it was moving it always blurred.

Here you can see the esca (lure) and illicium (althought blurred).

I'll see your hispidus and raise you a striatus.

In this pic, the esca is visible, although it is not luring.

Awesome finnage!

No way! I remember reading somewhere that striatus are tougher than hispidus. I can't seem to find the link, but I remember reading that  ...

Jake - didn't Scott M tell us that frogfish waste was easily removed? I haven't seen any to remove? What should I be looking for?

Yes, he said their waste is solid and easy to remove.  I have not seen any either, but I am sure my bristle worms make quick work of it.

striatus is latin for weak.
hispidus is latin for strong.

Ever since chicken fighting was banned in the 47th of the 48 lower states, I've been looking for a new passtime. I've got a receding bird's nest colony and a frag of GSP on Jake's Frogfish. Any takers? No offense Shane, but I have it on good authority that Jake's fish fights dirty. Ouch

Latin, smatin ...

I know my fish and it ain't no chump. hispidus might be strong, but striatus are known for their bow staff skills.

I guess that changes everything! You still want to risk that birds nest Jamison?

Do you think a couple clowns would survive in a nano with a frog?  Does the Frog stay on the substrate exclusively or will he sneak into the clowns xenia patch at night for a snack?

I kept my frogfish (way stronger than Jake's and Heil's combined) in my 8 gal with my two anemonefish and never had a problem.  He also never went for my shrimp.  I'm going to get another (Histrio histrio this time) in a couple months.  So flippin' cool.

ps- my frogfish spent last summer in Alaska hunting wolverines

Unlike Adam's wimpy frogfish mine would not put up with the flashy colors of the clowns.  They would soon be frogfish food.

I guess it depends on how big the clowns are and how small is the angler, or I guess if you buy a wimpy fish like Adam then you don't need to worry about it.

I went to several wholesalers in LA.... hand picked the best frogfish in the country.  Tickled the belly of the fish Jake ended up buying.
My frogfish did leave my anemonefish alone.... but hey you never asked me if he was compatible with triggers and puffers.  Maybe he doesn't waste his time on wimpy fish.

I'm reviving this thread to see if any of you current frogfish owners have any suggestions on how to get my new frogfish to eat...  Feeder guppies didn't work, Krill on a feeder stick put him to sleep.  Any other ideas?

Maybe he's just holding out for a weaker frogfish to come along, then he will attack and devour him...

I have been using silver sides.  You can easily break them in half while they're still frozen and use the tail end to lure with. Don't put the fish right in front of the frogfish. Make it come to you.

Have you tried ghost shrimp?

Once they're trained to eat, you may not even need a feeding stick. I just drop food near my frog fish and he will catch it before it hits the bottom!

I picked up some silversides last night, I'll try those when I get home from work tonight.  Also, I've been looking for ghost shrimp, but haven't been able to find any down in Utah County...  We'll see how the silversides work.

Cry I guess my frogfish wasn't as strong as I though he was after all.  I went home for lunch to find him on my chocolate chip stars dinner plate.  I'm really debating whether I want to try another one, or if I just want to give up on the whole frog fish thing for a while Unhappy

Well at least Shawn at Aquatica is cool and gave me some store credit for it (since it died within the first 5 days) that definitely helped with the sadness of paying a bunch for a fish only to loose it... I'd rather the fish than credit, but sometimes you gotta be happy the store backs what they sell.
