Hey, guys! I need a few more horse names! We've got Seabiscuit, SmartyJones, Snickers and of course, Mr ED ( a horse is a horse of course).

I have a few juveniles who are looking stellar. I know I want the first known male to be Barbaro.

None are actually black, so black beauty is out....

Any one have suggestions of racing horses, famous horses or any upright swimmers names?

(Off Topic: Where do latin names come from? These guys are Hippocampus erectus. Hippo? Campus? Erectus? They do swim upright.....)

How about Flicka, Trigger (Roy Rogers horse), Silver (Lone Ranger's horse), Buck (from Gunsmoke)?  Lucy ( I love Lucy) had a  horse once named Whirleygig.   Ok I'm showing my age, I'm done!

 Rocinante?

Silver, first name Hi Yo,  would work for one. A bit of silver coloring on it's tail. And, Flicka could be male or female, I think. Do you thing Secratariat is  too long and formal?

 Any more ideas?

I name mine based upon behavior, or at least a western name if not a horse name (Ringo etc..)

I used to have a dashing red and black stallion I named Fernando, but you have to say it correctly with emphasis.  I envisioned him clicking those Spanish things and stomping his boots as he danced around the females.  He was something else and lived over 4 years.

I also raised a female from a fry that my girlfriend named Monica since one of her first frozen mysis she paraded around in her mouth like a cigar for quite awhile.  I guess polite company could call her Groucho......

As far as the scientific name, most scientific names are latin but this is greek, hippocampus meaning literally "horse monster" or "horse seamonster" since early scientists were agast at male pregnancy, and a critter with both an exoskeleton and internal vertebrate skeleton.  They thought they might actually be insects at one time, but eventually decided they were a fish.

My Brother named a few of his horses from LOTR.  Including Shadowfax and Galadriel and Arwen.  By brother named his Dog Frodo about 15 years ago.
