Over the last few months I had been volunteering, in my spare time, to build an enclosure for a 270 gallon tank. We finally got it finished this afternoon. The young man I made it for loves reefs, but has special needs and has to be as isolated as possible from the tank and the hardware. . He can only be exposed for a limited number of hours a week. Therefore we decided to enclose the whole tank. Here is what it ended up looking like.

He was able to help out a lot during the construction... oddly enough the unfinished wood does not bother him.

The access really isn't controlled, it is just similar to a room with a window. Zech needs to avoid many of the things in and around the tank like magnetic fields around pumps. He needs to aviod being closer than 4 feet from the pumps. We designed the setup so all the pumps were behind the tank and the enclosure is there to look nice. We may be adding shielding once everything is up, running, and tested.
Mold is also a very big concern so there is a venting system to pull as much of the moisture out of the area as possible.

If the shielding is needed, we will be using either plates which are high effective but also expensive or a foil which is not as effective but more reasonably priced.
Most common metals do not have a high enough permeability to make a big difference with magnetic fields. For example Stainless steel has a permeability of around 400 where special magnetic shields have a permeability of 20,000+. We are really hoping that the tests show it is within an acceptable range on the outside of the enclosure.
