Subject: Help with coral id.

I am needing some help identifing this coral. A local guy is getting rid of it and I would like to know what it is. He calles it a "mat". My tank is a 55gal with 260watts pc.

They look like sea mat palys to me.  Be careful with those, they are very toxic!

I have one also and it is very nice when its polyps are out.  Can't testify to the toxic part because I don't touch it.

That is Florida Sea Mat.Big smile It grows in shallow water and turns a little green in the sun. I wouldn't worry about the toxicity. Unless you are already sensitive to coral, you would have to be fragging it, and getting the slime all over your hands and breathing the fumes for a while before it would have any effect.

Obviously, the only way you'd be effected is if you handle the coral.  If you do handle it, I would take precautions.
