Feather star. Filter feeders, and difficult to keep. It will most likely wither away and starve to death in your tank. When I was researching these, I read that they are selective filter feeders - meaning they actually filter out only certain types of phyto, making them quite difficult to keep in captivity.
Beautiful though, arent they?

I will give it my best shot....I have 2 different cultures of phyto going. So far after introducing it to my tank it looks very healthy, he's moving around extending his arms. My research said they mainly feed at night at the top of the reef extending their arms. We will see tonight with a good dose of phyto... green tonight and brown on sat. I hope this works this is one cool looking feather star. Thanks for your input Shane, thats what I needed.

Hi fisher, I was with you and Mark today when you both were looking at

It was perched on the top of the "amphitheater" all night and this morning in the bright sunlight.
Just now, I looked up and it's gone!
I found it. It's underneath a ledge! I wonder where it will walk to next.
I have a video of a deep sea crinoid swimming. If anyone wants to see it, I can email the file or perhaps someone could host it so we can all watch it.

Here is why I bought it.
A collector asked the LFS if they would like some really interesing "plants". The LFS said 'okay send me a few.'
So here they are in Utah.
Now we know they are most likely doomed, but since they are here, and since the LFS never meant to have them in the first place, why not enjoy them for a few moments. Okay, some will say that I should have left them at the LFS, and enjoyed them there, but it's not the same. And who knows, maybe they will like my tank. It's a bit atypical, isn't it?

Yep... Best left to the most expert of aquarists, and more specifically in a
species only tank dedicated to their native environment.  Really too
bad because they are soo awesome looking.
Aquatica highly recommended NOT buying them due to their difficulty,
and Mountain Shadow pretty much told me the same thing. So tempting
though.
Might do okay with Mark's 40gallon phyto dumps

Well, I just came from fish-4-u and spoke to Kris. He has on for a while now in a display tank. He feeds it a slurry of phyto/rots/flake. He mixes it and feeds at night. Here's the interesting part, it climbs to the top of the rocks and raises it's arms in anticipation of food. This motion is what it does in it's natural enviornment. We may be able to keep them alive. If we look back at the hobby who would have thought of fragging corals or breeding SWF in a closed enviornment. I am still researching all possibilities to give it the best possible care.... who knows.. I will fill everyone in on it's progress.

Please keep us very closely updated. I would really, truly love one. I love the really vibrant colors, and the fact that it's like a starfish that walks on it's arms...
Sooo pretty. I'll bet we can learn of a way to keep it alive. :-) Maybe in a few years I'll try one.

I would try contacting Dr. David Meyer. He knows more about keeping them than anyone else does. He may be able to steer you in the right direction. I'm sure they can be kept just fine, I was just saying that all beginners should stay away from them.
