Topic: Lionfish Demise Posted: June 09 2014 at 12:37pm |

My son's lionfish went missing last week. Not sure how he got lost, but he was gone for sure. Yesterday my daughter complained that my son's tank smelled bad. So I looked and found the dead lion in the sump. The only think I can think of is that he was killed by his tank mates and they hid the body in the sump. Nothing else makes any sense.
So the question is, how long can the body stay in the sump before it becomes unsafe to eat? He's been gone from the tank about 4 days. Once I found him I put him right in the freezer until I can find an answer.
Anyone know?

You mean...like...for human consumption? I would never eat an animal that died from an unknown cause. Plus, lionfish are no longer recommended for general consumption.
