Hi. I am new to this group and was just looking for any information at all about seahorses. I am soon to be recieving a pair and was looking for some experienced keepers that could tell me more about them. Thanks

Have you had a marine tank before? How are you planning on setting it up? Is it already running? When are you getting the seahorses?

Where are you getting them from? Wild caught can be difficult to
care for, I heard somewhere...
Check out Projectseahorse.com.They have a ton of stuff.
On our links page, you will find the Breeders Registry. I found
some good stuff there.

seahorses have to be direct feed or in a tank with low flow and no other fish to seal the food. So if you don't have time to feed them every day I would suggest not getting them.

Another word about Seahorses. There is a great article in this magazine Marine Fish and Reef 2003 Annual. I got it from MSM. The article is about Seahorses and Sea Dragons and everything that has to do with them. I would highly recommend getting a copy.

Suzy,
What is your perfect set up for seahorses? My wife would love to have a tank for seahorses, but I have always been a little aprehensive. Are they a ton of work? Do you grow live brine shrimp? How big is your seahorse tank? Do you have anything else in with them? I'm happy for any information you can share.

Hi, Shane! I've got a 20 gallon that has been up and running for
month, just empty. I put some rock in the back corners, and growing
blade calerpa for holdfasts. There is a ton of snack foods in there for
our stable.
From what I've researched, it is way difficult to raise wild caught,
but tank raised can be easier. Ocean Rider has seahorses that they
have raised in Hawaii, and they say they are eating frozen food. Of
course, they want us to buy their supplements!
I've been waiting 'till after Xmas to order. They are PRICEY! But, I
want a certain type (Zosterae). They will fit in a small space, and we
can have more than a pair. I'm hoping for a whole family! This breed
will eat baby brine shrimp! (which we do grow in the basement!)

Some of the club people that have kept Seahorses for any length of time, are Gary & Danielle Williams and Monique Turner. PM me for contact info.
Is there anyone else reading this that has kept them for a year or more?

We had one yellow perfect one for about a year.She would eat out of
my hand.One day she wouldn't eat, and died 3 days later. I was so
sad I took the tank down.....

Jake has breed seahorses before. He's kept them forever in a little 5 gal tank.

Suzy, I'm sorry for not realizing that you had "perfect one" for that long. Did it eat non-live food and how difficult was it to get it to eat from your hand?
I hope Jake can share some of his experience with us.
I wonder why AquariumQueen never came back? Did she get offended?

AQ be very careful with the sea horses. They are very fragile and take a lot of care.
I have a good friend in the offce who has just started to care for them, and he loves the ones that he has, but he has told me if they die (he has 3) he wouldn't do it again. he is feeding them twice a day. He is lucky and his will eat frozen food. But they are very picky even about that.
Good luck if you decide to go with them. IF you would like some advice from him and how he cares for his give me a pm and I will hook you up with him.
