Topic: Sand question: Posted: July 14 2004 at 5:47pm |
We're moving to Oregon in about a month and I've been thinking about
what to do with all of that great Oregon beach sand... Is there
any reason why I just couldn't go to the beach and fill up a couple of
5 gallon buckets with sand to use in a new aquarium? Are there a
lot of things that would die at a higher temperature (79
degrees?) With warmer water there would likely be some die off,
but if its at the beginning of a tank start up its no worse than dry
sand right? And it should have some great biodiversity in
it.
What do all of our experts say?
Thanks,
Brian

Not an expert but here's what I've got to say, Why not try a cold water system with indigenous critters? (those legally collectible of course) then you could take water right out of the ocean for easy water changes whenever you want.

I lived in Portland for 6 years......... Have the time of your life.... They have a cold water ocean so, the sand criters wont do you much good... does not mean you cant get sand and start slowly...... Good luck Try the Brewers Fest... Alot of fun...

My opinion is to add the cold water sand AFTER the tank is up and running for at least two months with a good growth of warm water LS. The die-off in the cold water sand needs a good amount of LS to eat it up.
On the other hand, some people that moved here from CA have used exclusively sand from the west coast waters and it worked like a charm.
Even in Oregon, a cold water tank would require a chiller.
I hope that you enjoy it there.

Brian asked me about a Marine Aquarium Club in Portland. I really can't find one, and don't there is one.
This brings up a challenge. The WMAS founder now lives in Oregon. I think you and Tim should start up the Portland club. Not sure if Tim is up for it (I'm sure Mark can talk him into it) but if Brian decides to start one, well you've got Tim right there to converse with.
In other words, if you don't do it Brian..... well then..... I don't know something bad will just happen.

And if you dont forward this email to at least 30 people in 30 minutes all your hair will fall out!!
Seriously though - I agree with Adam. That would be great to start up a club in Portland - there has got to be just a ton of people up there interested in the hobby. Good luck!!

It's wierd that there isn't one already. There seems to be tons of people online that I've noticed are from there. I enjoyed my visit there. The countryside reminded me of Germany

Well, I seem to recall, there was the "Greater Portland Aquarium Society" at one time. It may have been a fw/sw combo club (biggie sized?) It takes some determined/obsessive people to keep a club going. Ours almost died about five years ago.
Tim hasn't had a tank since he sold his to Joe and Cindy about 6 years ago. It's worth a shot though. He checks this MB from time to time and I have all his contact info. Let me know.
