Author: Mark Peterson
Subject: 763
Posted: September 10 2003 at 11:51pm

You should be able to find a local water conditioning/ water softener company that will sell you the parts that fit together. It's only P-B-M that uses 3/4 inch fittings. The store you find will probably use 3/8 inch fittings. Just let them know what size tubing you want to use and they (or you) can make it work with bushings if necessary. Be sure to use teflon tape on the threads. (Tell me if you haven't used tape before.)

Regarding the LFS and their algae problem, Ron Shimek wisely said "It's not that we have too much algae, just too little algae control. See my article in the June 2001 Sea Star (blue button to the left on this screen) titled "Herbivores vs. Carnivores".
An algae problem can start in response to many things, including fish death. I will not believe that a LFS could isolate the cause of their tank's algae problem to where they could blame the water!!!
An observant hobbyist will spot a change in the tank or an increase of algae and take measures to control it before it gets out of hand.

My own experience with out of control algae taught me some valuable lessons that I try to pass on in an article I can email to anyone that requests it. A nicely illustrated very brief version appears at this link green haired mermaid. Email me at the address below for the full version which includes tips and updates.
If you haven't been to the main pages of the www.garf.org website, you won't want to miss it.

Mark mrpslc@mstar.net

Edited by Mark Peterson

Of course you wouldn't run the activated alumina in the closed loop for the entire 5000 gallons! But for filtering source water to produce usable makeup water and for water changes, it appears to work just fine.

Here is a pic of the Bangerter tank taken last week. The only thing they do is feed daily and change water every two to three months. They have B-ionic but don't bother with it. No additives are used, yet I have to frag every 6 months or so to keep the coral managable. In fact, it's time to frag again! Anyone want some of that branching gorgonia?
I'm sold on Kold-Steril.
Of course, don't forget that I'm the wacko that makes a tank look good with the tapwater Jon Finch calls liquid rock!

Particularly the poly-filter portion. I am usually skeptical of what I don't understand. Their web site does nothing to help me better understand and is littered with half truths or exagerations. Here's a small list of statements from their web site that I have a hard time believing.

Drinking low hardness water is not healthy.

I don't buy that.

Ultra pure water is the perfect solvent. Presently many reef tank owners use R/O [nanofiltration], Ion-exchange resins and combination sof R/O + mixed bed resins or split bed resins + mixed bed resins producing high quality water [conductivity: 1.0µ/S-0.243µ/S] which requires the addition of buffers and minerals supplements before it can be used during replacement water changes.

You don't need to do or add anything to RO/DI water for top-off or water changes.

Finally, the addition of the Kold Ster-il's three filter media to any other filter canisters ---- is a waste of time and money. Our Patented filter media will not function in any other canister system ---- without the Patented (Filter Media) Retainer Assemblies.

Mark, I guess what you did is a waste of money .

Below 7.0 pH mainly ammonium ions (NH4+) are produced which are nontoxic and nonsorbable by Poly-Filter®.

Perhaps ammonium is less toxic then ammonia (I think the jury is still out). But to call ammonium nontoxic is silly... It will kill fish.

I understand RO and DI. I feel comfortable using it. I would probably not change, based on Kold-Sterile's web page. ymmv.

Yes it would be easy to use the 3 stage unit with kold-steril media. Cost: only the media at aprox $45

To answer seaham358's question: The canisters are the normal size used in R.O filters. I got all the parts except filtration media and tubing from a water conditioning store called Pacific Water. They are on the road just north of R.C Willey's main store.
I have free activated alumina (for phosphate and silicate removal) and can show you how to make a holder for the cup that comes with the basic media, which is best purchased online from a fish supply place. I did a search to find a source rather than have to explain everything to the Kold-Steril folks. They didn't want to sell their media to a DIYer!
Total cost: approx $125, no wasted water and as much Calcium and Magnesium as is in the tap water (which is quite a lot in NSL according to Jon Finch. I liked what he said at the meeting, that the water is like "liquid rock"!

Edited by Mark Peterson
