With it being on his jaw, it could cause issues whereas it might not normally if it was located elsewhere.]]>

It's a virus, and it will run its course in 3-6 weeks.  <br /><br />As gross as it sounds, think of it like a cold sore (also caused by a virus.)  It'll always be there in the background, but it tends to pop up during periods of stress or injury to the area.  Watch your tank to see if there's any aggression going on.  Most likely, the jawfish just injured himself while building his burrow, and the infection set it. <br /><br />There's a very slight possibility it's epitheliocystis...which is like fish chlamydia (not kidding), but it's a gram-negative bacteria.  You'd have to treat that with Furan-2 and/or Kanaplex for about 2 weeks outside the tank.  I doubt you'd be able to catch him.<br /><br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;]]>

I have seen Cleaner Shrimp clean fungal growths off of fish. Not sure whether a Jawfish would allow a cleaning.
