Nick is right...it could also be a mucous plug...which should go away on its own too.

Just make sure he keeps eating. No. All other fish seem free of issues and as I mentioned above, the fish is eating well. She even eats the reef flakes I toss in for variety sometimes.

I'll run the gamut of water tests tonight but everything is generally real stable.

If all of your parameters are in line, then I would just leave everything be. It's a virus, and it will run its course in 3-6 weeks.

As gross as it sounds, think of it like a cold sore (also caused by a virus.) It'll always be there in the background, but it tends to pop up during periods of stress or injury to the area. Watch your tank to see if there's any aggression going on. Most likely, the jawfish just injured himself while building his burrow, and the infection set it.

There's a very slight possibility it's epitheliocystis...which is like fish chlamydia (not kidding), but it's a gram-negative bacteria. You'd have to treat that with Furan-2 and/or Kanaplex for about 2 weeks outside the tank. I doubt you'd be able to catch him.

I agree, fungus can go away on it's own. I have seen Cleaner Shrimp clean fungal growths off of fish. Not sure whether a Jawfish would allow a cleaning. Maybe if the CS was a half-pint it would be less intimidating to the Jawfish. Smile

Looks like lymphocystis. It's a virus that usually clears on its own with good water quality. Marine fungal infections are incredibly rare.
