I used a gfo , carbon reactor . It was a dual reactor and its simple as a small maxi in your sump to the reactor and back to the sump. All of the above! I believe they increase the contact time of the media. Do you use reactors??  What do you use them for?  Carbon?  GFO?  Bio Pellets? 
 
How do you have them plumbed?
