Author: Chris
Subject: 4725
Posted: April 04 2005 at 2:59am

When I replaced my center brace I wanted to be sure the weldon 16 would hold before I removed it. I took a scrap piece of acrylic and one of the lights the tank came with and glued them together. 24 hours later I tryed to pull them apart and ended up pulling the light apart. The light did not break where it was bonded but about an inch away where the plastic was thinner. This just proved to me that the acrylic and the bond was as strong or stronger then the plastic used to brace the tank in the first place. When I bonded mine I could see the two plastics melt into each other. I also twisted the two pieces together to make the plastics bond even better. And I decided to use 2 braces just to be on the safe side. So far the tank has been filled and running without any mechanical problems for over 6 months.

In this hobby the tank is one of the cheapest parts especially when dealing with 55 gal and under. If I had to do it all over again I would buy a predrilled tank and not even worry about the brace or overflow at all.
