The 4 foot bulbs are easier to find and might be cheaper. Also hellolights.com seem to have the diy lighting parts cheap. I just got some 4' t5 bulbs on sale for $10 each from them {thanks to someone on this board} and they seem to be brighter then the ones I had before.

    Author: Mark Peterson
Subject: 20355
Posted: September 07 2007 at 12:02pm

T5 are HO (high output) fluorescent tubes. Yes, any ballast made for pc's can run t5's. T5 end caps are easily available. I'd check at Commercial Lighting. They may not have water tight end caps but will have the clips to hold the tubes in place.

Wire it the same way as a VHO tube taking into consideration the total length of tube(s). Measure the length of the 96 W PC and double it. That will give you an idea of roughly how much T5 length the ballast will run. The length does not have to be exact, but the wiring could be tricky. Note which wires connect to the leads in both pairs of tubes on the PC and hook them up to the opposite ends of the T5. If two or more of the T5 tubes you plan to use equal the doubled length of the 96W PC, connect the in-between ends together. In other words connect two ends of the T5's directly together. This means connecting all four pins (2 from each end) together as one. This fools the ballast into thinking the two T5's are one long tube, which is really what the biaxial 96 W PC really is.

Does this make sense? If you have other questions please call. It's much easier to talk about it while you are looking at it. And then you don't have to wait for me to come back to the MB.

Edited by Mark Peterson - September 07 2007 at 12:07pm
