sumps are relatively cheap to buy especially if you find one used. Ipersonally like looking under my tank and no seeing tupperware. I likemy acyclic sump a lot more than my glass sump. It just looks a lotcleaner

Protein skimmers do an amazing job and are also relatively cheapcompared to their performance. I was always told spend as much as canafford on your protein skimmer. ASM G series skimmer are my personalfavorite.

Most sumps have three main chambers. The overflow from the tank -refugium - and the return. Most of the time there are baffles betweenthe refugium and the return. Submersed pumps go in the return chamber -external pumps are on the outside of the sump and there is usually ahole drilled in the side of the sump and a bulkhead fitting.

On the far left (where the UV sterilizer is) you can see the two drainsfor the overflows. Filter socks go around those two pipes which is thefirst part of filtration. My protein skimmer will go in that samechamber.

Gunther - the cat - is checking out my refugium. That is where i will put some sand, a chunk of live rock, and bundle of plants.

Then you can see my heater inside my baffle - and then to my external pump.

Baffles are your friend. They reduce the amount of micro bubbles inyour water really well. Heaters do well when they are placed in thebaffles because ALL of the water flows past them.

Mike (manofcichlids) is coming over to plumb all of this next week - so I'll post somedetailed photos when i have water running through everything.

Remember - every setup is different and what works your someone else, may not work for you.

I use the K.I.S.S. philosophy. Keep It Simple, Sh1thead. There are manymodern methods for a healthy reef - that while can be a bit moreexpensive - they pay off in the long run.

I would really love to drop by and visit who ever....my situation is I live way up in the northern section of the Wasach. So, it is great to see pictures of everything. I am trying to gather my required equipment and materials to set up a nice salt tank here. It is a slow process on a tight budget. But soon enough it will happen. Post more pictures everyone, us minnows up here in the hills need more to grow on.

We are only in the office by appointment, but I just live up by thediscovery park, so I can run down just about anytime. After workfor most of you 9-5ers is when we are most busy and when I am there themost.
