I have used them on a timer before and it worked out ok. Eventually it stopped working but it only took 20 minutes of tinkering to figure out why. Unfortunatly by that point I had decided to bag the timer and left it on full time. What you should do instead of a timer is a rotating device. That way you get the advantage of high flow because the pump in on full time, and varied flow because it is not pointed in the same direction all the time.

Heh heh, thanks.  I went to that page, but didn't notice the link at the top for www.mjmods.com where you actually order the stuff.  Looks like he's out of stock on some of the stuff, I'll keep checking though, thanks!

I have two MJ1200's I bought for this, where did you order your parts from?  So far I've only done the poor-man's wave maker mod on them but I'd really like to do the full propeller mod.

I received the parts and completed the mods on my maxi jet 1000's(2 of them), turning them from 250+ gph power heads into water monsters, moving nearly 2000 gph each!!! It was relatively simple and only required a few minutes of my time.
