Subject: Lairds 180 gallon upgrade

So anyone who knows me knows I've been talking about this 180 for well over a year. Its been a major project mostly because I could never decide what I wanted exactly. The tank itself was the biggest problem because I wanted to go custom but couldn't justify the price difference. Its also been a slow process with how freakin expensive all the equipment is.

I'm going to be transfer all of the livestock from my 90 gallon over to the new big tank. I have new special grade sand that I will be adding to the new tank, but other then that all the livestock is coming from the new tank. I'm also going to be using DDH2ocean salt for this tank.

Here are a couple pics of the 90.

Right now I have just the tank and stand sitting in the middle of my house waiting to be plumbed in the next few days.

Tank Dimensions
72x24x24 Marine land corner flow tank with black silicon.

Custom Large Black knotty alder stand and canopy. This thing is huge and beautiful. Its 7.5 feet tall, 81inches wide, and 29 inches deep. It also has 4 big doors in front, and also doors on each end.

Equipment
2 mp40Wes
Reefo Barracuda return Pump
Emperor 40 watt UV
2 BRS deluxe Media Reactors
Elite Aquatics Skimmer
Apex Controler
Marine Magic 3 pump Dosing pump. I will be dosing BRS two part.
M3 model Elite Aquatics sump with 4 drains lines, baffles that are further apart to accomidate the larger return pump, and also probe holders.

Lighting
3 60watt Retro fit t5s. Bulbs are one ATI Blue + in the back, and one ATI purple + and another ATI Blue + in the front.
I will be moving my 2 DIY LED fixtures over to the new tank for the time being but I plan to make 3 new DIY fixtures, or buy the Vegas. I'm waiting to see how the Vega looks in person before I decide which way i'm going.

Plumbing
For the plumbing I'm doing SCH 80 valves, and there are a lot of them. I'm running everything off my large return pump which include my UV, and two reactors.

Drains
I'm doing two herbie style drains along with two emergency drains in the corners. I will then be running my return up the back and of the tank instead of through the overflows. I like this because it alows for my drains to be ultra quit and also be able to handle the large amount of flow i'm going to be getting with this barracuda. I also like the return lines away from the overflow so that the flow can help push the water into the overflow instead of away from it like in most tanks.

Aquascaping
I will be keeping 80% of my current rock and then adding more minimalist looking rock. I have Vida rock making some custom pieces for me.

•     Semi minimalist look.
•     Lots of sand space
•     SPS dominant
•     Acan rock and garden
•     Chalice area around perimeter
•     Zoa grow out
•     No rock or coral close to glass on any side
•     Plenty of swim space above and around rock

Fish

Currently Have
•     Borbonius Anthias
•     Yellow Tang
•     Kole Tang
•     Snowflake Clown
•     Chromis
•     Purple Firefish
•     Mandarin Goby
•     Flame hawk (will remove)

Wish List
•     Powder Blue Tang
•     helfrichi firefish trio
•     sohal tang
•     lyretail anthias trio

So my good friend Bill (sitaga) and I brought over the tank and went to put the tank in the stand. As we are straining to carry the tank with just the two of us we find that the stand is 1/8 of an inch too short to fit the tank. So we put the tank on the island in my kitchen and call the guy who built my stand. Luckily he ran right over and fixed it perfectly.

Looking realy good.  Have fun with the plumbing.  I am glad you are getting close.  I know you have been wanting to do this for a long time.  I like your sump ;-)  I do wish I had a little larger baffles the dart that we have really can move alot of water.  I am not sure if you are going to be using a auto top off or not but my tank is going though just under 4 gallons a day.

Everything really is looking good can't wait to see it set up.

Thanks

I for sure am going to be using an ATO, but I don't have it yet. The main reason I put the tank where I am was so that I could run a ATO to it, putting the tank anywhere else would make it impossible to run a ATO to it without it looking awful.    I was going to talk with Ryan at Aquatic Dreams about which ATO to use and then have them come out and install it.

Not a ton to report. A few plumbing parts from BRS didn't show so set back the build a bit. I'm super disappointed because I wanted to get it up this weekend. We will plumb what we can and get most of it set up but can't get it full of water until the middle of the week. Grrr.

Got the back painted. I originally put vinyl on the back but decided I hated it and tore it off and painted it.

Got the monster sump and pump in the stand.

Here a pic showing the nice big lip on the stand.

All my new equipment and sand is also all here. 200 pounds of special grade sand. A new 40watt emperor UV (HUGE), another new MP40Wes, and my marine magic triple doser.

Bill and I have been workin our butts off getting this put together. We are about 80% there, but that last 20% will make things look really really cool. We will be adding all the extra gate vales, reactors, UV, and finishing the plumbing up over the back.

I have valves and unions all over the place.

Right side of the tank with two herbie drains with gate valves on the right. The one on the far right I had to use spa tubing, I hated to but had to because I couldnt get the angles right to hard plumb it. The drains behind it are the two emergency drains plumbed together. Every drains has at least one union, and some have two.

Here is the left side of the tank. Drains, and the return pump.

Working on the manifold.

Manifold installed.

Back of the tank. You can see the return lines with its large gate valve and check valve. Also the end of the manifold that has a cap at the end of the union.

I have another cap I can put on that union so I can expand my manifold easily at any time.

Making progress.

Shelves in

I'll have my Apex outlets for most but for the few things that don't fit I bought this power strip that lets you turn off each outlet individual. I also mounted it right by the door so turning things on and off will be easy. The apex components will mount to that black baron the side of the stand.

And another one high and in the middle. When you are looking under the stand it strip is almost invisible.

Getting exciting since its almost done.

Got that monster UV installed. Found some cool plastic mounts to set that UV on and then hard plumbed it in off my manifold. Unions on both ends, as well as a gate valve so I can fine tune how much water I want going through the UV. The drain is the hard plumbed into the sump. I put a hammer in the photo to show how huge the UV is.

Josh, I got them off amazon.

dionysus, Yes i'm brining my returns up over the back. That way I can use all for holes from drains so I can bring a lot more flow into the tank. I also like the idea of the of the return lines pushing water toward the overflows instead of away.

The white PVC on the top going into the tank will be SCH 80 in the end to look better. I just put the white in to show what it will kind of look like.

Pushing water at the overflows? So your going to run the returns to the front of the tank? And push water to the back wall?

No, still the back. There will be 4 points where water is returning to the tank. Two will be on the back on the surface pointed toward each overflow, one point almost straight down, and 1 more pusing into the middle of the tank.

So have my live sand, and new rock in there cycling. I put in my new custom rock. Not put together like the final product will be but just to give an idea of the overall feel that its going to be I just tossed it all in there. I'm actually going to be taking a piece or two out because I don't like how crowded it already is. Plus I'm going to be bringing a few big pieces over from my current tank.

I'm going to rearrange things a bit, and not make the tall spots so tall. I also have a big tonga branch coming from my current tank that will feel in the gap on the right side a bit. As you can see its going to leave lots of swim space for my fish while still giving me a lot of nice spots to put my SPS colonies.

Top Down

Then like I said i'm bringing a few big pieces from my 90 gallon over.
This big branch thats right in the front.

This branching piece. Its in the shape of hand with 5 fingers.

Then this shelf piece that the majority of those colonies are grown on.

Update.

Still waiting on lighting. Doing a another DIY build but waiting on some LEDs to come back in stock before I order. Everything else is ready to go.

I can't wait to get it going. For the past 6months to a year i've been pulling out frags and colonies for people to hold because my tank was overgrown. I'm excited to get everything back in. I'll have over 30 different chalices frags alone coming back in once the the new tank is proven.

Altered my Herbie drains a little bit. Put 45 elbows on my emergency drains and brought them up higher and now the overflow and tank is silent. Its unbelievable that that much water can be moving through the system and it be silent but it is.

The return coming over the back is done. I have good circulation throughout the whole tank and get good surface agitation just from the return pump.

So I finally got my LEDs ordered and will have them this week. I'm going to build 3 fixtures. Each fixture will have 24 XRT Royal blues, 14 XPG cool whites, 4 Cree XRE Blues, 4 Cree UVs, 3 Cree Greens, and 3 Cree Reds on a 20in black heatsink with a splash guard.

Totals, Drivers, and Optics.

Cree Royal Blue XTE     72 Driven by 1     1 HLG-185-42B and 80 degree lens on the inside, and 60 degree on the edges

Cree Cool White XPG 42     Driven by     3 ELN-60-48D and 80 degree optics

Cree XP-E Blue 12 Driven by 1 ELN-60-48D    and   80 degree optics
Cree UV 12 Drive by one 1 LPC and 80 degree optics
Cree XP-E Green 9     Driven by 1 ELN-60-48D    and       No optics
Cree XP-E Red/Amber 9 Driven by 1 ELN-60-48D    and   No optics

They will be dimmed/controlled by my apex. My Royal blues and blues will be on the same variable speed port, the whites on another, the greens on another, and reds on another. The UV will not dimmed because I don't think they need to be.

I am very curious about your ramp technique, I will be finishing my build tomorrow and have the lights hung by Saturday and want the best chance for success, I will have an overage of power and would love to have your help/opinion on the matter.  Maybe I can come by and chat/buy a couple acro's.

I've got two colors figured out, but it's gonna take some time to figure out this new set up. Shouldn't be much different considering the green and reds are just for look. Just hope by coral doesn't have a problem during my learning curve.

Come on by and we can talk about it.

Hey just to let you know those fuses are on order and should be here by like saturday or monday is my guess.

Where to start....

So set up this tank and had problem after problem. Right after I got it set up I went through a hard breakup with my girlfriend of almost 4 years. So didnt care about the tank for awhile. Then things started to go down hill more and I did very little to stop it. Everything was alive just not happy. The tank looks like crap because my RB LEDs wont work on my new fixture . Just yellow and makes everything brown out.

Then I went out of town for the holidays and came back to find about half my large SPS collection dead. Entire colonies gone. Over the next two days of being home I lost about 95% of my SPS and about 40% of everything else. Felt like I had lost a part of me. It really did. Absolutely devastating.

I was done with the tank and deciding how to get rid of it.

Then my brother got sick for a week and then and end up passing away about 10 days ago. Coming home to seeing my awful, and dirty tank just made things worse. Feeling helpless through his ordeal was the worst feeling I've ever had and now I feel I need to do everything I can to bring my tank back.

I just mixed 30 gallons for a water change. I plan to attempt to clean this tank. I've never had a tank 1/100 as dirty as this one is now. From there I want to get things stable. After that I want to just do easy LPS and feel the tank chuck full of beautiful fish. I've only lost a couple fish through all this so the tank is at least healthy enough for them. This is a big tank with very minimalistic rock so I can really put a lot of fish in it and thats what I plan to do.

It has been nice over the months having a lot of people text me to see where i'd been and how things are going. I've got 33 PMs to read and respond to and I apologize for not getting back to you guys. I havent been on this site for months.

I owe a handful of people coral that I pre-sold right before all this. Bill has backup frags of a few things of mine and some of which are things people had bought. I'll make this right with all of you and feel really awful about it all.

Thanks for all the support everyone.

Nikki, I forgot you had those corals. That's a huge relief. Do you still have a pearlberry? That was what I was most upset about losing.

Jarad, that's very nice of you and I will have to take you up on that, but my guess is 4 months would be the very soonest I'd feel comfortable putting sps back in.

What's the best glass scraper for a big tank? I'd always used a homemade stick with razor blades but its not cutting it on this big guy. I need something with a decent arm and really good blade. The coraline is really bad on my glass along the sand bed.

I found a plastic handled paint scraper at the paint store. It uses a much heavier blade that a razor but still very sharp. I just have to remember to rinse it off and dry it each time I use it or it rusts very heavily. Blades are a couple of bucks instead of pennies like razors but it works awesome on coraline.

My tank is finally up and running correctly! The lights are 100% working because of Bills hard work, and a midnight run to ReefKeeper78s house for some parts.

I also finally have my plumbing done, so my monster UV, and reactors are all now all running off my manifold.

I'm really excited about it all.

Next steps are to get some more fish to help make it look not so empty. I also need to redo my aquascapping . My rockwork was going to be awesome when I was going to have a tank full of big SPS colonies but now that I don't have those anymore it looks a little too bare for me. So I'm going to bunch the rock up a little more while I build up my collections again.

I'm in love with these lights. Being able to control them like this is amazing. I have complete control over every color, Whites, Reds, Greens, UV's and then Blue and Royal Blue together. Then on top of that I have two Blue + bulbs on the outsides and 1 Purple + on the inside. The spectrum when they are all mixed is absolutely perfect in my opinion.

I had to turn the whites, reds, and UVs off and the blues all the way down to get this pic because otherwise it was just a bright blur.

The LEDs look kind of funny because I have the two end unties angled toward the middle, so the inside sides are up about an inch higher then the ends.

So as I said before the tank was really unhealthy and dirtier then any tank i've ever owned. I also had really bad cyano outbreak.

This picture was taken after I had been cleaning and syphoning it out for a couple weeks. You can see the sand still looks awful but its a 1000% improvement over what it was. This is just a small section of the tank. You can see a lot of the damaged corals. I had two 5 gallon buckets completely full of skeletons that I cleaned out of the tank a couple months ago..... I also have some aiptasia to take care of, I have a file fish in there to try and help me out.

Then after not being able to get rid of it without chemical assistance I gave in. I did a Chemiclean dosage of about 3/4 of what they recommended and it worked shockingly well. Left it in there for 48 hours and it got rid of 99% of the cyano. I did a really big deep cleaning of the tank and a 20% water change, and ran carbon for a day.   I then did a big BioClean dose and let that sit over night with no carbon, GFO, or UV going. Then this morning I turned on my GFO, and Carbon reactors and started up the big UV.

The tank is looking really good... well really good for what it was. The sand is white and clean and everything really coming along. I'm still too embarrassed to put up a full tank shot yet. I also am starting dosing Korallen-Zucht Amino Acid Concentrate to help my LPS recover. I've had a lot of tissue recession from a lot of my chalices so need to get them fixed.

I also added a WXM module so I can have more control over my vortechs. I sure like having more control.

My goal is to start recollecting coral in about 6 weeks. I want to go one solid month of everything looking good, then do another water change and then wait a week or two then I'm going to start accumulating coral and trying to replace a lot of my old pieces.

If not mistaken don't they recommend 40% after using the Chemclean?
Also a fighting conch works really well for cyano.
