Well I went from a year-old nano cube to a 65gallon RedSea Max about a month ago. I just got the rest of the rock I needed to create a better aquascape yesterday, and finished it up last night. Currently there are 2 oscellaris clownfish, 1 Red Sea Sailfin Tang, 1 Powder Blue Tang, and 1 Yellow-Eyed Tang. For now the only "decorative" inverts I have are a peppermint shrimp, a cleaner shrimp, and a RBTA. Obviously there is a CUC and some nice corals, many of which are from awesome people around here. Thanks everyone for your help and contributions! :)

I love mine so far, although the protein skimmer doesn't seem to adjust well for me; it's either foaming so bad that it's sucking water out of the tank and overflowing within 5 minutes, or it's not foaming at all. I'm probably going to through some other skimmer in, or convert that space into a refugium, haven't decided which though.

Awesome!

Have you had trouble adjusting your skimmer? If not, I'd like some advice to see if I can get mine to work better.

I've had one running for over a year now. I think your tank may need to establish a bioload before it starts working properly. If I remember right it took awhile before mine started working properly. Just be patient. It actually works pretty good.

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind. I did move 30lbs of rock, lots of corals, and the 2 clowns over from a 28 gallon nano cube, but I guess that really isn't enough of a bioload for the skimmer to start pulling stuff out of the water.

I recently lost the Powder Blue and Yellow Eye to ich, but the Sailfin is making a great recovery. I don't think the clowns were affected by the ich, and they're still doing great, so I'm not worried.

I've also acquired a bit more coral, and changed the aquascaping slighting. I will try to post pics later.

Oh, and the skimmer is now working great, so I guess I did just need to wait a little longer.

Yesterday I installed an AquaUV 15 watt UV sterilizer using the accessory kit, and just plumbing it using the return pump. I'm hoping to add a media reactor and chiller into this line soon. Since feeding using garlic to feed, the ich is all but gone from the Sailfin, but the clowns have a little bit on them, although it has decreased over the past few days since I added a cleaner wrasse. I've also collected a few more corals over the past little while, as well as a large green bubble tip anemone that I got today. I'll be posting new pictures tomorrow, which will also be added to my original album on photobucket located http://photobucket.com/The-Reef" rel="nofollow - here.

I uploaded over 300 new photos to the photobucket album today, so if you want to see more of the tank, there's lots more http://photobucket.com/The-Reef" rel="nofollow - here.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Feeding Schedule:
Frozen Mysis Shrimp (target feed corals)
Pellet Food 2 days
Frozen Cyclopeeze (target feed corals)
Pellet Food 2 days

Current Parameters:
Ammonia 0ppm
Nitrite 0ppm
Nitrate 5ppm
Phosphates 0ppm
Ph 8.0
Day Temperature 79-80F
Night Temperature 77-78F
Specific Gravity 1.025
Calcium 480ppm
Alk/dKh 7.9

I have also stopped running the skimmer over the last 3 days since it was adding a ton of heat to my tank, and even with the cooling fans running my daytime temperature was a good 84F. I already know that I am going to need a chiller, come summer. That will be plumbed in line with the UV sterilizer, and hopefully a carbon reactor.

While the pump for the skimmer may run a little warm, it should not be heating up your tank. If it is really contributing that much heat to the system- there may be something wrong with the pump. I would also venture to say you should be able to get by without a chiller. I am running 400G, almost 1600W of light and currently four 250W heaters. With two fans in the display, my temp has not risen above 77.5. Just a thought as a chiller and operating costs will add up.

Ok, thanks. I'll have to look into that, and what might be causing it to heat the water so much. I know the heater is not the issue here, since I didn't run it for almost a month to see if it was causing the rise in temperature, and the temperature was still high. I really don't want to have to get a chiller since they are so expensive, so thank you for pointing this out.

Here's how I plumbed the UV sterilizer, for anyone who might be interested...

The picture doesn't really show it, but basically I used some 5/8" tubing to go from the return pump up to one of the attachments on the accessory kit. Then I ran 5/8" tubing down from the barbed fitting on the outlet, to the UV sterilizer, and then back up to the other barbed piece. I then used about 3" of 5/8" to go from the inner return fitting of the accessory kit to a reducer. I used the remaining 1/2" tubing that originally ran from the return pump to the nozzle attachment, to attach the nozzle to the reducer.

Just tested my water tonight, after doing a water change a few days ago...

Specific Gravity 1.025
Ammonia 0ppm
Nitrite 0ppm
Nitrate 5ppm
Phosphate 0ppm
Ph 7.9
Calcium 410ppm
dKH 14

I know the KH is high, and I'm working on that. Other than that, the tank is doing great and is progressing quite nicely. I have noticed a little cyano in a corner of the tank, and after readjusting the return nozzles it has since decreased, and flow looks to be very nice throughout the tank.

Also, I took apart the skimmer pump and found a small bit of debris wedged in the impeller compartment, which after removing seemed to be the cause of my earlier troubles. The skimmer is now running much quieter and my tank is running at much more optimal temperatures. During the day it is about 78-79F with the cooling fans running, and about 76-77F at night with the cooling fans still running. Thanks DLindquist for pointing that out!...probably just saved me a good $500+ on a chiller...which is now likely to be spent on corals or on another tank setup

Well sad news...Saturday night my gbta decided he was going to go for a walk around the tank and got himself chopped up by the new Vortech. The resulting toxins and changes in the water quality ended up killing my Sailfin Tang. It took me a good 15minutes just to figure out why my Sailfin was dead, but once I saw the remains of the anemone it was pretty clear what happened. Planning to do a 20 gallon water change this afternoon.

As of yesterday...

Wow I'm pathetic....it takes a "disaster" to get me to take pictures...

So some of you may have seen my thread in the emergency section, titled http://utahreefs.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=56064&title=disaster" rel="nofollow - Disaster!

After spending 4 hours removing all of the rock, fish, coral, and invertebrates, I realized I had just made a huge mistake (this was at 3am). So, after going to Aquatic Dreams and having some sense knocked into me by Ryan, I came home with another 15lbs live sand. After adding that to the current sand bed and mixing it in, I used a syphon and a pump to create a temporary sump in a 5 gallon bucket where I was running a filter sock to clean out detritus from the water and the sand. After doing that for a good 6 hours, I got the tank filled back up to full level, but only put three rocks in to begin with. At about 9pm Saturday I started in on aquascaping...finished at about midnight. I then spent another hour transferring corals, glueing them in place, and moving all the remaining invertebrates back into the tank. After another 30 minutes of letting everything settle, I moved the fish back into the tank. I then spent all of Sunday morning cleaning up buckets, equipment, and just tidying up the living room. So far everything is doing great, and I'm very happy with the new aquascape.

On Tuesday I added a bicolor blenny (thanks again Saltwater Trish!). He loves hiding out in holes and caves in my rock and I purposely built plenty of little caves and crevices for him in the new aquascape. So far he loves hanging out in all of them and sleeps curled up in a little notch in the rocks on the right side of the tank.

Surprisingly my powder blue handled everything very well and doesn't seem to have ich yet, and I'm hopeful that he won't get it from this stressful event. Even if he does though, I feed with garlic and anti-parasitic pellets, and have a UV sterilizer.

Hoping to get down to Salt Lake early this week to pick up some corals from some members on the MB. So far the only thing that I have lost is a purple tip acropora (literally lost...I've no idea where on earth it is...except for the general area of my house) ...luckily everything else seems to be doing quite well and recovering quickly, so I'm confident I won't be losing anything else from this mess.

Before the "disaster" (this wasn't all that recent...but the rockwork was the same)

Now...

Horseshoe crab died last night, and ever since the whole fiasco with the rocks falling down, he hasn't been doing great, so it wasn't a huge surprise.

It actually was against the back last time, and it isn't totally against it this time. The new structure is actually free-standing for the most part. The minimum amount of clearance is about 1/2" between the rocks and the tank.

Rastas and more pics will be up tonight...

Just tested my levels yesterday...
Specific Gravity 1.024
Ammonia 0ppm
Nitrite 0ppm
Nitrate 5ppm
Phosphates 0ppm
pH 8.0
dKH 8.6
Calcium 390ppm

-Added a double dose of Part C (EcoCalc calcium part)
-Added a single dose of Part A (EcoCalc alkalinity part)
-Topped off with 1/2 gallon salt water, and 1/2 gallon RO to raise salinity to 1.025

I also got more tigger pods from backwards32 (Fish Food Direct) as well as some nannochloropsis paste to feed them as well as my tank. So far the copepods seem to be doing well in their 5 gallon bucket, and hopefully I'll have a successful culture soon.

Last night, about 10 minutes after the lights were out, I added a few drops of the nannochloropsis paste (Tahitian blend), and almost instantly feeder tentacles were appearing from all of the corals. I've never seen more than 3 tentacles extended from my galaxia, and last night the thing was covered in them, there were at least 50 that were extended a good 3 inches about the coral!!!

LOL. No kidding! Plus my tiger tail cucumber got himself shredded by my Vortech last night because the foam cover finally ripped all the way through. Cry Just one heck of a streak of bad luck! Oh well, I'll get this tank set straight even if it kills me! LOL

Just a general update...
As I said above, my tiger tail lasted me 2 days until getting shredded by the Vortech. Cry

I did a 10 gallon water change today and have continued with regular dosing of 2 part, and so far everything looks happy and healthy (except the cucumber obviously).

Nitrate ~2.5ppm
Phosphates ~0.01

Unfortunately my rastas decided to up and disappear yesterday and despite looking all over the tank and in every rock and crevice they are still missing. Cry

On the up side...I went up to Aquatic Dreams yesterday afternoon and got myself a nice size rock of sun polyps. There are about 50-60 polyps and plenty of new growth around the base.

5 hours after being introduced to the tank (2 hours after lights went out)

Sun polyps are awesome. I had a colony about that size that looked fantastic for a few months. you can even "train" them to open up during the day by target feeding. The challenge for me in my 90G tank was feeding them enough without causing nutrient/algae problems in the tank. Those tubastreas need a lot of feeding since that's their ONLY source of energy. A larger tank would be easier to balance in that regard, but I suppose with a smaller tank you could do it by being uber diligent about water changes and such. Keep us posted on how those work for you. If you manage to find the sweet spot I may give them another try sometime.

I'm working on training them to open up during the day, but so far they still prefer night, although I haven't had them that long. I am very careful about feeding them, and I feed them every other day with frozen mysis. I try to get about 2-3 shrimp per polyp and I cut all of the pumps so that I can keep the excess shrimp from floating away. Basically only the sun polyps get fed at this time and there aren't hardly any extra shrimp floating off and decaying in the tank.

I don't think it could, but with my luck with things finding their way into my Vortech it wouldn't be overly surprising to me. LOL

So just another quick update...

I got some good frags of montipora setosa the other day, all of which are doing great. The clam is still nice and happy, and has fully opened up now. His colors are really starting to pop now, and he is definitely my favorite addition to the tank so far.

The powder blue has ich...again. He's pretty bad this time, but still eating and behaving normally, so I'm hoping he'll pull through. If not, I'm done with tangs in this tank, at least for awhile.

I will be testing my tank water today, and hopefully taking more pictures and actually uploading them today.

Hate to say it, but you may want to prepare for it. I thought I was never going to have to deal with it after a full year of never having ich, and then one day I came home to 3 tangs with ich. Two days later I was down to 1. He lasted a while, but if you read through my thread, you'll see that my green bubble tip anemone decided to walk through my vortech, which ended up killing the sailfin that had survived my first round with ich. Cry

Anyways, everything is still doing great, and the tang is acting and behaving normally, but has visible ich on his pectoral fins, and all over the sides of his body. I'm still hopeful that he will make it, but I won't be surprised if he doesn't....Dang ich! Angry

With regard to your Rastas, were you able to locate the plug they were on?  I had some nice zoas disappear from the plug, thought they had just melted.  After some late nights inspecting with the lights off, I discovered a eunicid worm was eating them!  Took some work, but I finally got him out of there and I've had no problems since.

Posted By: Ann_A
Date Posted: June 10 2012 at 7:57am
I looked through my entire tank and watched the plug a lot and so far I haven't found anything that would be eating them, except my emerald crab. He decided to eat almost all of my nice zoas and I'm now left with hardly any zoas alive. Needless to say, when I caught him he was doomed. He certainly does make a good frag plug though. LOL

So far I have been unable to catch my bicolor blenny, who has taken to eating corals. So far he has killed the following:
-ALL Torch Disapprove
-ALL Sunny D's Unhappy
-Watermelon Zoas (all but 3 heads) Ouch
-Tricolor Acropora Cry
-Deepwater Acropora Angry
-Purple/Green Acropora (originally thought to be an encrusting montipora) Censored

And he has damaged a ton of other corals Cry

That really sucks. Good luck catching him. Dont they like to just sit on rocks and stuff? If so you might be able to siphon him out when you do a water change or something. I read about somebody that needed to get a goby out but they couldnt but in the end they sihoned it out.

I've tried netting him, trapping him, and siphoning him, all without success. So far the closest I got to getting rid of him was when he swam into my Vortech when it was turned off, and I turned it back on without realizing he was in it (if only it had finished him...or I had noticed and actually caught him).

I CAUGHT HIM!!!!  OMFG I actually caught him!!!  It took 4, yes 4 nets of various sizes and the "in the dark" with a flashlight trick.  THANK YOU MARK PETERSON!!!  Basically you wait till night time or early dawn and then without turning on any lights track down the fish.  (moonlights help)  Then get the net ready and as you shine the light into the fish's eyes swipe the net and you may be lucky enough to catch him.  In my case it made him run for the nearest corner and I surrounded it with nets (including a red one which supposedly fish can't see... based on the fact that it has let me catch numerous fish I'd say it's true) I used the flashlight to shine in the fish's eyes to keep it disoriented long enough. Then shone the light through the corner where it was hiding... It then made a dash to get away from the light and went straight into the large red net.  BINGO!!! He was so confused from all the light flashing that even in the time it took me to figure out that I had actually caught him, he still couldn't figure out how to get out of the net he "couldn't see".

Hope these tips help you with your fish problem.  If I were you I'd see about picking up a red net and see if you can catch him with that or maybe trap him in a rock and pull the whole rock out fish included.

Got him!!!!! Spent 4 hours trying to net and trap him today. Then after the lights had been off for an hour I went after him with a net, the trap, and a flashlight. Spent maybe 30 minutes chasing him from rock to rock until he hid in the trap, which obviously wasn't the best choice of refuge.
