Topic: Rainsford gobies Posted: November 24 2005 at 11:10am |
I got four rainsford gobies (court jester gobies) in my 210 to help cylce it. well one of them is more round than the other. My question is, Are rainsfords live bearers or egg layers? thanks.

There are very few saltwater livebearers. I don't think gobies belong in that group.

would the eggs make it larger or is it just a fat fish?

Those are two of the three possibilities.
Fat goby
Eggs awaiting spawning
Internal tumor or parasite
Ugh, that "cycling" word makes me shiver. Did you use LS, LR, and LW? If so, I hope that you added coral along with the fish. No need to wait for the C word to happen.

I waited two weeks. I put the LR and LS in. I waited a week then added tons of softies to help suck up nutrients, all open polyps extended... after a week of that I added the fish. I figured the smaller fish would help with the biological filtration CYCLE.

When I set up my 125 I just used lr.,ls, and 30 gallons of lw and put all my critters in! I never saw any spike at all and 3 months later I have only lost a couple of sps. Now everything is doing great

do you think they are going to be OK or should I put them in my 50 and wait a few more weeks? I just figured they would help with the process.

I don't think they'll help the process. They may be just fine. I think you did a good job getting things established ahead of time. Eventually you have to put fish in there, and a couple little fish in such a big tank is probably the best way to go.

Josh, I say leave 'em in. In a tank that size you may not be able to get them out now anyway. I love rainsford gobies. I recently added a pair to my tank. They are very docile and will likely be the perfect first additions to that new, awesome tank. Got any pics yet?

I wouldn't worry one bit about the fish. You have done a great job at setting this tank up.
Give it some more time to be sure and then enjoy your new tank.

Those are some pretty cool looking fish. I've never really noticed them before in my fish buying excursions.

I have never even seen them locally until I got them. I have always planned on getting them online. I didn't even know they sifted sand. but they sift sand threw their gills like jawfish.

I've always considered them fairly common fish.

I agree with Adam. They are so small and normally slow moving that you may miss them if you aren't looking for them.
They are algae eaters. The sand you see them "sifting" is being cleaned of cyano and diatoms. They also pick at algae on surfaces of LR, macroalgae and sometimes glass.
