Hey guys I know I've not posted in a while... sorry. Anyhow I've got an idea for a filter that I wanted to run past you all and get your opinion.

Perhaps it's been done before or I'm an idiot for thinking of it but I thought it would be a cool Idea to build a 4 stage filter underneath my little 30 gallon tank using RO filter canisters. Here is my thoughts broken down in filter stages-: 1st Stage: Cheato Reactor (use clear RO canister and wrap it in a strip LEDs), 2nd Stage: LR Rubble in a darken canister, 3rd Sage: LR Rubble in a darken canister, and 4th Stage filter floss to remove particulate. Then I would hook it up to an Eheim pump pushing it back up to the tank.

Maintenance would probably be just replacing the filter floss once a month or so and the rest should run itself for years. I've also successfully built a CA reactor for my 235 using 2 RO canister filters for the last 4 years so I know on principle it should work.

Currently I'm running an Eheim canister filter on it and I like that it's so quite but I don't think it's doing as good of a job my idea would do.

So what do ya think?

I'm not sure you can get a reactor that is truly clear so I am not sure how much light you will get in there.

You would have to trim the cheato back in the first canister.

I would hook it up so that the eheim pump is pushing the water into the filter not trying to draw it through the filter. Aquarium pumps are not designed to draw water as much as to push water. This would also keep you from running into issues with cavitation if air gets into the filter.

Flow rate would be very important in this type of setup as both of your filter media selections do better with low flow rates to increase contact time.

That's what I've got initially.

That was my initial thought is that thinning out the chaeto might be a pain in the ass...
