I have just changed the reef system at my shop to be topped off with water flowing out of a newly set up 20L (20 gal. long) freshwater aquarium, replacing the RO reservoir previously used for auto top-off.

I say it's Amazon River water because of how I set up this freshwater aquarium. A thin layer of a mix of potting soil, dirt and peatmoss was placed on the bottom glass under the gravel. I also used quite a lot of waterlogged driftwood in the aquascaping. I collected the driftwood and all the gravel, including the silt that came mixed in with the gravel, from the creek catch basin near the mouth of Big Cottonwood Canyon.

The water has a slightly golden brown tint because of the mud and peat. I added some large plants to purify the water; Water Hyacinth and Water Lettuce. The plants, mud, silt, peat and driftwood makes this new tank the kind of environment and water quality I want for tropical South American fish. If you have heard of "Black Water" that's kind of what I did here. I set it up on Friday and added 13 fish on Saturday; 3 Guppies, 5 Neons, 2 Green Cory Cats and 3 Black Mollies. I was confident in adding the fish so soon because I used Live Sand, Live Rock and Live Water from the creek. Also used the Live Water that I got extra with the Plants and all the water the fish came in. The remaining ~10 gals of water needed to fill the 20L tank was RO water.

Oh, a small HOB filter provides water flow and particulate filtration. The light is again, another Chinese Black Box LED (for any that have seen the thread about my tropical plant lighting setup using a Black Box LED fixture).

I'll get some pics up soon. Smile

Aloha,
Mark  Hug

Interesting ...  this is certainly some out-of-the-box thinking.

Let us know how this progresses.
