"Physics of Aquarium Lighting: Electrons to Food" Paul Ricketts

3/2 at 7pm
Rose Garden Building
Sugar House Park
1601 East 2100 South
Salt Lake City, UT

Join us Thursday March 2nd at the Rose Garden Building in Sugar House Park as Paul Ricketts will be discussing the physics of light and how those electrons feed your coral.  While this is a scientific discussion, Paul will do a great job keeping this easy to understand and will be bringing some cool things to demo and keep interactive.

What is light? Does it change just because it comes from a different source? We're going to dive deep into the world of the tiny. So tiny, you can't see it directly, but you still use it to see. I'll help you understand how we can flip a switch on our light fixtures, how the light is converted from electrons to photons and how we can then watch it stream from the fixture without any further help from us. We'll then follow those light particles into the cells of corals' photosynthetic zooxanthellae and talk about how they convert that light into food for the algae's host and see what is causing fluorescence when we have our blues on.

We will be out some rainbow glasses for everyone to keep (only have 50 though) and we'll have some things people can use to determine the light output in wavelengths of different lights. We will also have some light detection demos and some electricity demos for a "shocking" experience.

As always we will have, food, raffle items and more at the event.  We will also have LFS Tour 2017 punch cards available for sale.

Josh Newsome from Dynasty Corals will be joining us from Idaho for this meeting. He will be bringing the heat, in the form of fantastic coral (who knows, maybe better weather).  You definitely don't want to miss Josh and Dynasty!
