Topic: Identification? Good or Bad? Posted: June 23 2013 at 5:01am |
I've noticed an increase in these white swirl like things on my rocks and on the back of the aquarium. Could someone let me know if they are good or bad? If it is normal, is it controllable, do I need to worry? I don't believe its ick (?) but I've never experienced it before. My thoughts are that they are some type of little critter. Those spots don't appear on any of my fish. Thank you!

I also found this on the back of the tank. I have since removed it because it does not look good...but does anyone have a clue as to what this is?

The first things are teeny little stationary, beneficial worms called Spirorbids. They put out little hairs like feather dusters to collect food from the water column. The more nutrients you have in the water will cause them to keep reproducing. Limit the nutrients and you'll limit their population.
The second thing...well...ehhh, I can't tell. Maybe a sponge?

+1 to Reefdup. I have them all over my tank. If you lookat the bigger ones, you can see the 'feather duster'. If you don't like them, cut down on your nutrients (for me it was phytofeast) and they'll gradually reduce.

Thank you all so much. I will work on lowering the nutrients.

Aloha, They are awesome. They are filter feeders and good ones at that. There are so many good organisms that grow in our tanks. The ones we don't like are so few that I can name them on my finfers. I never remove anything until I know what it is and see it doing harm. Enjoy all the cool wild things that you can grow in your reef aquarium. Mark 808-345-1049 call/text anytime

Last I read (Advanced Aquarist published one of these numbers...and the other was from some university study...forget which ones), there were over 300 obligate coral pests identified, and over 600 opportunistic coral pests identified. Add in fish pests...

Anything that stays in one place and filter feeds is great IMO.

+1 to reefdUp in that they won't hurt.
For me there are areas of good and bad. worms like this that filter feed and wont hurt anything so that's good right? I have a bunch in my refugium. A million of these all over my glass and everything else and I'll bet I'd start to not like them. That's bad :)
I've seen a few more then a handful of undesirable things in my tank and I'll bet I've removed some things others would have left but like I told my little sisters growing, just because it can grow there doesn't mean you should let it.
What do you think looks nice? Go with that.

ReefdUp you got me on that one. Of course, I was speaking of the major pests that a reef hobbyist typically encounters.
