I have a rock that has 5 or 6 Xenia and several green stripe mushrooms.  A couple of the shrooms are huge and are going up the stalks of the Xenia.  Anyway, the Xenia are not opening very much and I'm wondering if the shrooms are bothering them?  If that is what is going on, do I just cut the mushrooms off?  If I just slice them off, will they die or could they become frags?  if they would live, does anyone want them?

Thanks, Gail

If you slice them off they will become frags and will grow back from the foot also.

If you want the xenia to survive you will need to move/remove the offending mushrooms ASAP. I waited until it was to late and my xenia was toasted by a shroom that moved next to and fried it. I just noticed one that has extended just one part of its lip towards one of my nice zoas and that the zoa is starting to react to it. Guess which one will win if I don't do something.

How do you remove the mushroom completely?

You can cut the shroom at the base and use it for a frag if you wish. Then place a nice chunk of rock over the stump to prevent it from getting light. In a month or so the stump can be considered dead for sure. Also Aptasia control kills most any coral flesh if you wanna be really mean about it.
