The tanks at the Gateway are stunning! Have you a reason to think the staff at TLP are unable to keep their tanks maintained? I'm thinking they would do better than me, 'cause they have staff and volunteers that just test and treat and feed and clean and do all the stuff I should be doing to my tank!
They do have a large volunteer staff! I'm thinking about joining them, 'cause I lost my spot in the WMAS!!

Suzy,
I admire your dedication and desire, but really come on here... Any reason to to think the staff at TLP are unable to keep their tanks maintained? Yes, many reasons. How about them killing my breeding pair of poison frogs (which I shouldn't have donated), how about them killing everything they have had? How about their crappy systems and poor filtration methods they've had on tanks at SLCC for years? I remember going there and trying to save Rick Bangerter's Lionfish, when they had no idea what to feed it and how to care for it. I saw it dieing right there in front of me. What about that great big white tank they had for the shark, you know the tank that kept leaking and soon became a sand tank with turtles? What about a complete lack of knowledge for their tank inhabitants and general husbandry?
I'm really trying to stay out of this, and I thought I was doing a good job at it. But if you are going to ask those questions and make it sound like they are wonderful group of aquarists, then someone has to step in here.
Sorry, it isn't personal, just trying to be honest.

Suzy, I think it's great they brought in the curator from Boston. I hope it serves tlp and the community well. I hope they succeed.

Suzy, I don't win. I'm not out to win anything. I too want to see The Living Planet succeed. I'll tell you and everyone else here what I told The Salt Lake Tribune. If they hire Jake Pehrson (or one of a few other people) then I will be doing everything I can to suppor them. But for now, I don't see reason to get involved. I only started posting in this topic once it was said that I was there at there facility on tv.
I'm just saying we should at least provide the most accurate info we can here. I too think it is great they hired someone with experience. In fact I'd like to have him come speak to our club. I just called The Living Planet right now and the person who answered the phone said she had never heard of Juan. She had no idea who he was. I said "he was the Director of Husbandry, the guy from New England you hired". She then said "Oh he quit, he doesn't work for us anymore". Just something else to think about, but, I still wouldn't mind having him visit our club.

I guess it's idealistic, but I think that in order for TLP to succeed, they need to have personnel as dedicated as Suzy. Personnel who know about raising phyto, rotifers, raising ghost shrimp, and are willing to work as hard as Suzy to make everything come together. That means from phyto to krill to rays to sharks, etc. That was the intention of my earlier post - to say that I'm ALL for it if they are dedicated. Not just dedicated to the political part of getting this on the ballot and voted for - - but also to having the best care and food and specialists on hand. I was agreeing with you, Suzy - I really would like to hear their views. Then I would likely be 100% convinced to vote for it.
Boy, this is hard to explain via message board.

I agree with Renee, hard to explain. I too agree that if the TLP staff were as smart and dedicated as Suzy is they would have been up and running years ago. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Juan left already! Not too surprising. He told me he was only going to be there till the Gateway was up and running. My opinion is that as long as Brent Anderson is in charge, they won't be able to keep any good employees and they will never make it. Personally, I am tired of trying to support the losing team. Not that there is an opposing team, it's just a figure of speech. I've decided to put my effort into other areas. And I don't feel guilty about that anymore

To everyone who has posted to support the TLP in this post, I am so sorry. When I started this post, I emailed to the presidency to see if everyone was OK with it. Very few replies later, I was under the naive impression that it was OK. After I started the post, I emailed to them again to see if they would post something positive, so the members would know that we wanted a public aquarium, which in my heart, I still think most of them do. I received only one reply to that email, so I mistakenly thought it would be ok. Now, I feel I've put some of you in the uncomfortable spot of choosing between Adam and I. Please, don't feel that way. I am so sorry because I knew there was something going on between Brent and Adam, of which I still feel unaware of. And, I believe Mark is right about the losing battle. If I can't convince Aquarium enthusiasts to support having this, how can I expect conservative thrifty Utahns to vote for it?

Suzy,
I don't think you have put us in a position to pick you or Adam.
Everybody disagrees on something. People just need to listen to both sides of the subject and make up their own minds. Don't stop telling us your opinion just as others shouldn't hold back theirs.
IMO this thread has been helpful and enlightening to many people.

I agree with Jake on this. I think Suzy has done a great job supporting one side of the debate. She has sure motivated more people than anyone else I know. I too think we should continue hearing all the opinions.
And Jake is also right in that we all disagree on some things. I still (after 3 years of trying) can not get Jake to say anemonefish. What worse than that is that he is contageous and now people like Carl and Jon think everything is a clownfish. Oh how it hurts my ears. Could it be any worse? Oh yes, I could be a lions fan.

Here's a reply to an email I got from the Mayor: Dear Suzy- It is nice to hear from you again. I am aware of your steadfast support of the Living Planet Aquarium and I commend you on your tenacity. In general I may be more likely to support projects that are well planned, have realistic potential for success, are supported by the vast majority of Salt Lake County residents, and provide positive primary and secondary externalities. In addition, I feel it is important for any project to be adequately funded during the initial planning phases in order to be considered viable. I urge you to continue voicing your opinion to the members of your community. Thank you again for your emails. Sincerely- Mayor Nancy Workman Kinda sounds like she's getting kinda tired of hearing from me, and wants me to bug "members of your community"! Guess that's you guys! (I'm not going to vote for her! I hope her recent scandal episode bites her in the butt next election! )

In other words, "Thanks for allowing me to have my aide type this reply for you. I was worried that I may not have enough work for him to do today. He washed and waxed my car yesterday, already fed and bathed the dog not to mention the foot rub was fantastic. But, I really don't feel like doing anything about this nor do I feel like doing much of anything really. I am collecting a nice paycheck and getting a killer tan. Why screw up progress? Pester... errr... I mean ask someone else, they might actually give a . Thank you for your support and for my aide's job security for another day".
Suzy, I think that what you are trying to do is honorable. I really do! One thing that I am not sure of yet is what is the impression or reception of your efforts from TLP?

I have posted the emails I've got from Brent Anderson. Juan Sabolones just wants me for my seahorses!!!! They all seem really nice to me. But, the only one I met in person was Brent, and the volunteers who were working the day we went to the Gateway exhibit. And, thats the only time I met Brent.... Can you email to the council? Tell them you want a TLP, and not an unused stupid road to nowhere! Thanks!!

I'm sorry I made a reference to the circumference of someone's cranium. I was just teasing but, since this thread has gone from bad to worse to horrible... He really is a good guy, and an asset to our club. No one does more for us than Adam. I'm sorry, Adam.. You are the cutest president we've ever had....
