I've been messing around with a way to breed them. I read that they
cannibalize their young (didn't Roseanne coin that term?). So, I had
to think of way to grow them, but I didn't want to go to the trouble
of putting the ones with eggs separate, watching them to give birth,
and then setting up a grow out tank. Here's what I came up with:

It's a 10 gallon tank with brackish water, ~ 1.012ish. Inside is a
piece of eggcrate, bought from Home Depot. It's on a few pieces of
pvc pipe to make legs. On top of that is bridal veil from the local
fabric shop. A piece of rigid tubing hooked up to our phyto farm
provides the water movement. Simple, huh?

The parents live on top of the shrimp apartment. Their eggs and
poo (which turns out to be baby food) fall through the bridal veil.
The offspring live and grow happily awaiting their turn to hang out
with Ooday and the Seahorse posse!

I didn't actually think this up all by myself, but i will take credit for
the eggcrate and pvc!

So far, I've got a few tiny guys under there! They are actually coming
up to the top level to see what life is like on top. Sometimes, they
get caught in the net to go see what life is like in the reef!

What do you think? It's working, but kinda stinky! It's OK where we
are, 'cause there's an open window right next to the set up. Wonder
where I'll put it in the winter?

Sweet shrimpery... I like it alot. BTW, as long as there's light coming through the window, should be fine open or closed... the glass will probably allow the proper light waves for algae growth... That is what you're interested in, right?

No, this is set up by our phyto farm. It's got plenty of fake light.
And, it's in the basement by the northern window, which provides
very little light. I just use the window to air out the room!!

I actually gave up on this set up. One of our fish friends told me the
fry needed rots to live. I didn't have enough rots to share. I was very
surprised to see a little tiny shrimp jump one day! After a couple of
weeks of total neglect!

Do they need phyto to grow quicker or better? I do have a big need
for them!

Hey suzy, IT WORKS, congratulations, I'll have to come by again and get some notes on your arrangement and try to replicate the idea, Sweet.

Peregrinus, when I buy these guys , they are in fresh water. One of
the lfs guys, I think it was Mr F4U, told me they do better in
brackish.....

Chris, if we can't get our guys to eat frozen, we might as well take
advantage of their spawnage! But, I don't think I'd go to all this
trouble if I only had one snout to feed!

Suzy, I have two gallon jugs of rotifers waiting to be used. Do you need them?

Thanks, Mark! I can always feed somebody rots, but I think the baby
shrimp are eating their parents poo. I haven't ever fed them, and just
found them by accident. Do you think they would grow better/faster
if I fed them rotifers?

I do have 3 DP bottles full, so it would be greedy of me to accept
them from you. But, it would be a good excuse to see you!

What do you think? Greedy or I take you to lunch tomorrow?

BTW, Mark, what 6 hours are you closed? Did someone call you in
the middle of the night?

Suzy,

Don't ever just get rid of ghost shrimp.  They are awesome, and I'll take them in a heartbeat.  Others should jump at them when offered as well.

And I to am curious on that 18 hour line.  I never thought that would change.

Adam

Come to a meeting, they’re fun!

I meant 3 bottles of rotifers! I'd never get rid of shrimps! I have 5
hungry snouts to feed!

Who do you think called Mark in the middle of the night? (Had to be
that Carl guy! Just 'cause he's got biceps, he thinks he can just call a
24 hr hotline any ol' time!)

so I too want to breed these little beasts. But everyone tells me a different story on what there eggs are and such. Got pics? Ive tried to put just the ones I thought had eggs into the sump for safety and into a different water source completly, but to no avail. One guy I knew through the grapevine bred the crap outa them. I't can't be too hard....... there cheep at F4U
I will just give my warning that your system will flood, bulbs will burn out, and things will take continuous maintenance... get over it.
