Topic: MH via Marine Aquatics Posted: May 26 2004 at 1:04am |
Please excuse the formatting, my mac doesn't seem to work too well with this forum- all pics are at end of post:
Hi Everyone: For those considering new lights, I would like to share the look of my recent acquisition of 2X250W XDE 20,000K XM bulbs (2X250W ARO ballasts; 48 inch reflector, 2 cooling fans and 5LED moonlight) that were installed by Eric from Marine Aquatics in my new reef tank canopy (72g AGA bowfront). Eric did a fantastic job and I highly recommend him. Total cost was approximately the same as if I had purchased the parts and installed them myself and then botched up the job. I spent many hours (the whole 2 days actually) last weekend basking in the beautiful new rays hitting my sparsely populated new tank- I'm taking it slow. If only my camera could do justice to the poetry in motion:
Here is a closer look, the blue is accurate at least on my screen:
This is my first coral- a hammer that looks more like an anvil, it was revived by Eric with tetracycline so I thought it had character and deserved the first spot in my tank:
And finally, can someone please ID this rock (?) anemone:
I will show what's under the hood in a future post if anyone is interested -I just wanted to plug Eric's work now because I think we need to support the LFS or we will end up having to buy with the caveat that "your livestock may vary" !
BTW, allow me to introduce myself, I'm a total newbie to the hobby and this is my first post on WMAS (third if you count the "tests" - webmaster: there is a mac issue going on ). Although I did keep freshwater fish many years ago, I am here to learn saltwater from scratch. I have lurked here for a few weeks and it's very clear that this is a great community. Asad was generous enough to show me his XM bulbs that convinced me I wanted (rather, had to have) the same although my canopy size could only accomodate the XDEs. He also seeded my tank with a handful of Florida sand (the real stuff). As I said, great community. Looking forward to swapping frags when my tank is ready. See you all at the meetings. Adam, my check is in the mail (or will be soon !).
BigBlue
(I am editing this post to simply add "returns" between the pics. Call it a test to see if it can be done by a moderator, no editing to any of the rest of the post--- Adam)

Wow! What a gorgeous tank! Cool illumination! But, I really like your stand and canopy. Looks very sci-fi ish, something from a Hollywood movie set! It is stunning! And, the Mac thing goes on here, too! I found out that if I only post one pic per post/reply, it lets me type stuff and load a pic. I tried to put more than one pic a couple of times, but it didn't work. Bummed me out bigtime, 'cause we've got dialup. Now, I just do one pic at a time, so if it doesn't work, it didn't take a half hour!

What browser are you using?
Internet Explorer or Safari on a Mac is somewhat limited compared to IE on a PC. The forum is much more robust when used with a PC and IE 5.0 or higher. Many options are automatically turned of for Mac users using Safari or IE.
You may want to try using Mozilla Firefox 0.6 or Camino .8 beta as they work better with the forum. You can download them for free at www.mozilla.org

Posting pics: I do not believe it is the Mac. I believe you just need to learn how to do it. Many pics can be placed in one post. The trick is to cut and paste the link to the spot in the text where you want it to appear, because it always gets downloaded to the end of the text and end of the last pic downloaded, even for PC's. To make the pics line up vertically rather than horizontally, hit the "Enter" button after each link/code. I actually hit "Enter" twice, to give some white space between each pic. BigBlue, Welcome to the group. Please try editing your post above to get the pics lined up vertically. P.S. In case you didn't realize it, you can add a ton of coral to your tank right now if you wish. Coral are easier to keep than fish and unlike fish, are actually more a part of the water filtration than water pollution.

I'll try that! I like to cut and paste! So, I type everything I want, then download 2 or more pics then cut and paste that computer lingo thing that says suzypicblahblahblah to where I want it in the text? Thanks, Jake! But I gotta keep Safari. I don't have any more room to download anything 'till my son comes to visit in July. He cleans out all the crap I don't need anymore, than I can keep getting all those security update things.... I don't have enough desire to learn how to do it myself! But, I do have my own domain now! suzys-reef.com (My mothers Day present)

Bigblue, good to see your tank is online. It looks great for being so new. Did you end making a refugium under the tank?? what light did you use for the macro alage there?
Just a pointer on the camera, try using the "white balance" feature and it should come out with better color and get rid of the saturated blue.

Thanks for the posting tips everyone, I'll try them. I think changing the Web browser (currently using IE and Safari) is the best shot as I've already tried the copying pasting thing- somehow there is information embedded in the local link to the uploaded pic that gets destroyed even by editing preceding text. Copying and pasting causes similar problems (for me). I do have VIrtual PC and I may try that for 100% compatibility. The mac users out there know why I hold onto my mac, I wont even try to explain it here. Jake, this is a great website- thanks. I'll let you know what ends up working for me. I should mention that the tank is only up for about 2 weeks and I do intend to fill it as my pocketbook allows. Anyone got a latin ID for the anemone ? I fed it shrimp last night and it was quite an experience. I would like to learn more about this species. Also, I intend to get a pair of clowns in the future and does anyone know if this anemone hosts them ? I've read that one has to be careful introducing a second anemone into the tank (Pacific vs Atlantic?) Peregrinus, I picked up the anemone as part of a deal including a few pieces. After feeding the anemone I think it is priceless. Suzy, multiple pics were achieved by uploading at the end of the post all one after the other without further editing of the post. Asad, no refugium yet. I intend to put that in within the next few weeks. Will be back for some more of that grape stuff if you can spare it. I had to throw out the first lot as I didn't have lights to support it at the time. I don't have a skimmer yet either. I'm spending too much time just mesmerized by the few inhabitants right now. I'll try the white balance thing but should mention that the background wall is also blue so it may not be a misrepresentation (except for contrast being too high) of the true colors of the light. Thank for the tip though. Tonight's project - auto water top off. Cheers for now. BigBlue

The Rock Flower Anemone, Epicystis crucifer, needs no feeding. In fact, I suggest if you must feed it, give it only a tiny piece not more than 2x month. It does not host any clowns. Now someone will come on here and tell me an exception...I'm expecting it.... Please don't tell me that you can't at least hit "Enter" after each pic to make them line up vertically What if you hit enter right after each one downloads?

Mark and everyone,
Please note that I was able to "enter" after each pic. Not sure if BigBlue could have done it or not, but for future reference a moderator can do it. Although, I don't like the idea of it, because that was the first time I've edited into someone elses post, and I don't like the idea of doing it.

Epicystis crucifer. They don't host fish. They are a very very sticky anemone. I can't imagine anything getting away from it's grasp. You can see mine here: http://www.utahreefs.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=1958
Mark, why not feed it? I have not purposefully feed mine but he gets food every day when I feed my fish.

Mark, As strange as it may seem, while using a Powerbook G4 running OSX(V?) there were absolutely no options other than what I posted. Any editing including insertion of a space or carriage return destroyed the image link when viewed under "Preview Post". Anyway, I'm confident that Virtual PC will fix the issue for me. Note that I'm normally not posting at 2 am- I really was trying hard not to subject your eyes to the bad foramtting ! Thanks for the info on the feeding schedule. He/she did seem to really enjoy it . I collected a bunch of those flower anemonies in florida. they are extremely hardy and like intense light. I found huge numbers of these of all colors and sizes in ankle deep water in florida so more light the better. They tend to not move much at all. I had mine spawn in the tank and now I see baby flower anemones all over the rock work. The parents are not doing too good anymore because all my other corals have overgrown and blocked most of the light and I havent fed them for a while either.

Yeah that's kinda what I meant, figuring it grabs a morsel here and there. It actually looks like mutliple anemones in the pic...3-4 of them maybe? I was amazed at how "sticky" mine were, too. Sometimes the pricked feeling lasted a few minutes. I lost them in a big Xenia crash, that you can read about in the Sea Star Online June 2000 issue.

Big Blue, My Rock Anemone Looks almost exactly like yours. Green Body with white Tentacles. I love mine. He (She/It) is about 7" across at full "Bloom". It loves the Metal Halide lights we are both running. Contrary to Marks suggestion I feed mine about 1-2 times a week just because it is fun to watch.
As for adding another anemone I belive that a fair number of Rock Anemones could live in the same tank quite happily. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. I have also never seen a BTA or LTA bother these anemones. (I hope they don't because I'm adding a HUGE BTA to my tank tonight.)
