Topic: Non-Photosynthetic Coral Article Posted: February 06 2008 at 2:26pm |
Has anyone read the article on Reef Central for this month. The Article is about "a successful method for maintaining an azooxanthellate reef aquarium". Which in my understanding means an aquarium for corals and creatures that are strictly filter feeders and get no energy from light. http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2008-02/feature/index.php

I've given some insight to Chuck Mathews (one of those articles). I'm working on a very similar article with some people in Ohio (shout out Crystal).
I'm still not ready to tell people to buy these corals... but some people have been very successful recently.

My chili coral frag is doing well; even without target feeding. It exhibits a nice "inflation" and great polyp extension - especially once the halides go off (and I have it under a rock "shelf")
My Sun Coral same thing; I stopped trying to target feed it because the shape of the rock it is on made the "2 liter soda bottle" method impossible - and it still looks great after 6 - 7 months
The only one I am having some difficulty with is my Green (Stokesi) Goniopora - even though it is not Non - Photosynthetic. I got lazy with the "soda bottle" and now it has started to shrink I am trying to nurse it back but I am not too optimistic

Nice setup. It looks like my new tank would be very similar to this one in terms of water movement.

Ethanol is a readily available source of carbon (food) for bacteria. Vodka is the "safest" ethanol to get since it's food grade and essentially just ethanol and water. The other spirits (gin, bourbon, tequila, etc) also contain additives for taste.
