Topic: Rust stains on my carbon bags? Posted: March 01 2006 at 10:46pm |
The other day I took out the mesh bags that I had filled with carbon and on all three bags there were what really looks like rust stains on the bag.
Do I have a metal contamination problem? Don't know where it would've come from, have no idea why there's rust stains on my mesh bags. Each bag was located in a different area in my sump/refugium.
Any ideas as to what this is or if it's a concern?

very interesting post, i had this exact same thing happen to me about 2 months ago actually! it hasn't happened since though so i wrote it off as a freak algae occurance.
oddly it did not happen on my phosphate media filter bag, just the carbon.
i'd love to get to the bottom of this as well!

I believe it is due to iron.

Ooops... as far as a bad thing... it most likely could be as algae likes iron.

So should I keep using them? The only thing in my tank right now is curing LR.

Sometimes my computer opens the RC window, other times not. What's up.
I was thinking that it's no big deal, but also thinking that a magnet might find the stray piece of iron filing. Am I on track?

The RC thread seems like a waste of time to read. No conclusion, no definitive answers, lots of conjecture.

Isn't that what all "this" is about?
There are very few definitive answers even when presented as such.
Bring me a bag and I should be able to tell if it's iron. If it's not iron, it'll likely just biological. But as is "concluded" in that rc thread... what difference does it make? (none).

john if i my rust stains ever appear again i'll let it keep getting rusty and bring it to a meeting for you. maybe xokay has one showing the symptom right now.
why do you think it would occur on the carbon bag only and not any of the other filter bags in the system?

Jon before you answer that.... Why is it only happening once in a while and not all the time?

If the iron is from the activated carbon, then it might stand to reason that iron reducing bacteria would concentrate in the vacinity. But I don't know.

Too late. I don't know . I've never had it so I've never really concerned myself with it.

I have three rusty bags right now if anyone wants to see them : ) and I'm hopeful that by next month's meeting I'll be able to start attending those meetings too.
