I've tried 10K Ushio, 10K AB, 10K Coralvue, 10K xm, 12K Sunburst and 14K Hamiltons.  Best color and life was the Ushio 10K.  Best all around performance is the xm 10Ks.  The only bulb I wouldn't recommend is the Coralvue.  It turned redish after only a couple months.

jfinch you have tryed every  brand out there haven't you? I was thinking of going with the XM 20k for my400w and the 10k for the 2 250w'ers but thought I would get some input from the experts first.

Anyone else have a preferance?

I've used Hamilton (Ushio) 10K and XM 10K. Overall, I like the Ushios better.

That is exactly what I have on my tank.  I've tried XM 20K and EVC 20K for my center 400 watter and they're both nice.  I like the XM a little better because it's a little more blue then the EVC.

OK, I thought it might be another kind of light.  So it is a MH but the brand is XE.

The performance of a MH bulb is also dependant on the ballast. The spectral
plot of an Iwasaki 6500k 250W SE MH bulb may have a peak at 500nm with
a PFO ballast and a peak at 540nm with an IceCap.

Sanjay Joshi has some data on various bulbs/ballasts with objective analysis.
