Author: JAMIE123
Subject: Need Help with Glass Aquarium Repair!!!!!!!!!!
Posted: August 13 2023 at 8:31am

Hey Arthur, dealing with a cracked tank can be a real challenge. While you're on the right track with resealing, it's important to use materials specifically designed for aquariums. Silicone sealants formulated for aquarium use will ensure the safety of your aquatic environment. When it comes to your idea of using windshield repair materials, it's best to stick with aquarium-safe options to avoid any potential harm to your aquatic life. For your tank repair, I'd recommend focusing on using a reliable aquarium silicone sealant to properly reseal the cracked area. If you're seeking a successful solution that aligns with your aquarium's well-being, you might consider checking out resources like Crack Eraser's windshield crack repair kit (<span -sheets-value=""1":2,"2":"https://crackeraser.com/"" -sheets-userat=""2":2049,"3":"1":0,"3":1,"14":"1":2,"2":1136076" -sheets-hyper="https://crackeraser.com/" style="text-decoration-line: underline; font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial; text-decoration-skip-ink: none; color: rgb17, 85, 204;">crackeraser.com). However, ensure it's suitable for aquariums before applying it. If you're unsure, consulting experienced aquarists or forums might provide valuable insights. Your dedication to your tank's well-being is commendable, and I hope your repair turns out successful!

In my experience, using a cracked windshield repair kit can be a great solution. These kits are specifically designed to repair cracks in glass and provide a strong, reliable fix. You can find a variety of windshield repair kits at CrackEraser <span -sheets-value=""1":2,"2":"https://crackeraser.com/collections/all-windshield-repair-kits"" -sheets-userat=""2":4097,"3":"1":0,"3":1,"15":"Arial"" -sheets-hyper="https://crackeraser.com/collections/all-windshield-repair-kits" style="text-decoration-line: underline; font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial; text-decoration-skip-ink: none; color: rgb17, 85, 204;">https://crackeraser.com/collections/all-windshield-repair-kits. By applying the kit's specialized tools and resins, you can reinforce the cracked area before applying silicone to seal it. This dual approach can provide extra measures of support and help prevent further damage. If you're unsure about the process, it's always a good idea to consult a professional or someone experienced in tank repairs. Best of luck with fixing your tank!

My tanks has a plastic corner overflow itself. However, now that I think about it, it may not be a perfect seal, which isn't really a problem for an internal overflow anyway. Not too much of a problem for a sump either I suppose.

I don't know, I think glass may end up being less expensive so I may just not worry about blocking light through any baffles...

My Solana 34 had a plastic chamber siliconed on the back and most tanks have the overflow box siliconed in right?? I've put together a basic design I like and now I'm considering somehow blacking out the baffles on either side of the refugium to minimize light spillage into other compartments. If the sump were acrylic I would just use opaque acrylic for those baffles, but it's all being done in glass since acrylic doesn't actually bond to silicone.

Is there a good paint product out there that will stand up to saltwater, UV, and not harm the water chemistry? Don't push at all. In order to hold the drill still I used a sample of LVP flooring and taped it to the glass. You should keep the the bit cool by running water on it. Another option is to have some plumbers putty and make a little dam to hold water. Finally, make sure you have a towel or something under the hole you want to cut so you don't chip the glass when the cutout falls through. Or you could ask a local fish store to do it. I had aquatic dreams drill a few for me several years back and it cost me about as much as the bit would cost me.
